History
Established in 1901 by JG and Martha Hargis, the original acreage was purchased following the great land lottery in Lawton which opened for settlement the land acquired by the US government from the Kiowa-Comanche and Apache reservations in the southwestern part of the territory.
The Hargis family had been living in Collin County, Texas and they came with two covered wagons of household possessions along with chickens and cattle. The trip took eleven days. They originally lived in a dugout until they built their permanent home.
Beefmasters were introduced to the ranch in 1966, when LG Hargis, Jr, (grandson of JG and Martha) and his wife, Frances purchased a Beefmaster bull to cross with their Hereford and Black Baldy cows. The following year, they started buying heifers. Mr. Hargis was a charter member of ISA Cattle Company of San Angelo, Texas, and the Foundation Beefmaster Association.
The genetics which Mr. Hargis worked so hard to establish continued under the oversight of his son, David Hargis until his death in 2016.
Today, ranch operations are led by Chris Hargis, and his wife, Jessica. Together with their children, Waylon and Madelyn, they are passionate about the Hargis Ranch tradition of outstanding foundation bred Beefmaster cattle.
